Bearcats Fall to Gorillas in Four

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team's post-season chances might have come to an end tonight against Pittsburg State in four games (30-28, 21-30, 26-30, 33-31).

The Bearcats were able to win game one, by holding Pitt State to a .143 attack percentage, while Northwest hit .200. In the second game, the Gorillas stung Northwest for a match high .404 attack percentage.

Northwest had four athletes with double digit kills, with junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) leading the way with 23. Trowbridge also had a team high 16 digs for her thirteenth double-double. Trowbridge also had a team high .339 attack percentage and a team high 24 points.

Fellow classmate, MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) followed Trowbridge up with 15 kills, and also came up 3 blocks.

Sophomore classmates, Rachel Spensley (Dubuque, Iowa) and Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) each had 12 kills. Spensley however, came up with a double-double by chipping in 15 digs. Cummings also on the defensive side of the ball had three solo blocks and three assisted blocks, to help the team total of 10.

Both of the setters also came up with double-doubles, junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) leading the way with 39 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa) had 24 assists and 10 digs.

Stilwell is now just 41 assist from moving into a sixth place tie all-time at Northwest in career assists.

The Bearcats will now have to get some help from the teams in front of them to get a shot at the MIAA Tournament. Northwest will have to hope that Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern lose out in their remaining matches.

Northwest will be back in action on Friday at Southwest Baptist starting at 7 p.m. and Saturday they will see Missouri Southern on the road, start time at noon.

With the loss, the Bearcats are now 13-18 overall and 3-11 in the MIAA, while Pitt State goes to 10-18 and 4-9 in the conference.
