Northwest Falls to Washburn in Three
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team was downed tonight at Bearcat Arena by No. 9 Washburn in three games (25-30, 28-30, 24-30).
The Bearcats went back and forth with Washburn in the match. In game one there were 12 ties and eight lead changes. In game two, it was down to four ties and three lead changes and game three it totaled nine ties and six lead changes.
In game one, Northwest held the lead at 20-19, before Washburn went on an 11-5 run to end the first game. In game two, Washburn held on to a seven point lead before the Bearcats tied the game up at 27, and that was all the closer Northwest would get.
In the final game, Washburn gained the lead at 13-12 and never lost it again, going up by as much as six.
Defensively for the Bearcats, they were led by sophomore Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa), who had a match high nine blocks. As a team, Northwest had 18 assisted blocks and two solo's, both solo blocks came by Cummings.
Offensively for Northwest, they were led by sophomore Rachel Spensley (Dubuque, Iowa) with 14 kills, followed up by junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) and her 13 kills. Trowbridge also had her 11 double-double of the season when she came away with a team high 12 digs.
The Northwest setters, junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa) combined for 33 assists. Hankins had a team high 25 assists, while Stilwell had eight.
Northwest falls to 12-15 overall and 2-8 in the MIAA, while Washburn goes to 22-1 and 10-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats will be back on the court tomorrow at noon against Central Missouri.
