Bearcats Win First Match of Henderson State Invite
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team defeated Harding University in four games, 3-1 (28-30, 30-26, 33-31, 30-24), in the Henderson State-Ouachita Baptist Classic Friday afternoon.
In game one, the Bearcats were down by seven at 11-4 and stormed back to tie the game at 13. In game two, Northwest came out flat down 0-4, but the Bearcats were able to retake the lead at 8-6. Northwest was able to hold the lead the rest of the way through the second game.
The Bearcats were down most of game three, until they tied the game up at 25. From then on, it went back and forth with five ties and three lead changes. In game four, the Bearcats were down 2-3 and came back to take the lead for good at 7-6.
The highlight of the match was sophomore Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) and her career high 17 blocks. Cummings had 15 assisted and two solo blocks, which ranks her third in MIAA history for individual blocks in a match.
Another highlight for Northwest was junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa), who had a match-high 25 kills. Trowbridge also had her seventh double-double of the season with 14 digs. Sophomore Rachel Spensley (Dubuque, Iowa) had 12 kills and 24 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Junior MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) had 14 kills in the match, along with a match high .414 attack percentage. The setters for the Bearcats, junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa), had 30 and 28 assists, respectively.
As a team, Northwest had 25 blocks, which broke the school record for blocks in a match set in 2002. The previous total was 21, when the Bearcats blocked Lock Haven.
The Bearcats improved to 10-12 on the season, while Harding falls to 20-3. Harding received 18 votes in the latest AVCA poll (Oct. 3). Northwest will play Henderson State tonight at 6:30. The Bearcats defeated Henderson State earlier this season at the Missouri Southern Invitational in five games.
