Volleyball Wins Two in a Row
Maryville, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team grabbed the victory for the third time in four matches this week. The Bearcats won over Missouri Southern this afternoon at Bearcat Arena in five, 3-2 (22-30, 30-20, 28-30, 30-17, 15-6).
Northwest and Missouri Southern were tied 11 times in game one and the lead switched six times. The Bearcats were hampered in game one with a .114 attack percentage, but bounced back in game two with a .486 attack percentage.
The Northwest Bearcats were led offensively by junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa), who had a game high 18 kills and team high 13 digs. That was Trowbridge's sixth double-double of the year.
Other leaders for the Bearcats was senior Mandy Tryon (Adel, Iowa) with 13 kills, sophomore Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) 14 kills, fellow classmate Rachel Spensley (Dubuque, Iowa) and junior MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) each had 11 kills. Heston also had a double-double with 16 digs -- that was her second of the week.
Cummings was the match leader with a .444 attack percent, which was her fourth time in as many matches to have over a .400 attack percent. Cummings also chipped in with a game high six blocks, with four assisted and two solo.
The setters combined to have 50 assists, with junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) leading the team with 31. Sophomore Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa) had 19 assists.
After winning three out of four this week, Northwest improved to 9-11 overall and 2-6 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern falls to 6-12 overall and 1-6 in the conference. The Bearcats will now get ready to play the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
