Volleyball Wins at Bearcat Arena For First Time in 2005

Maryville, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team was victorious for the first time at Bearcat Arena tonight and they got their first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association win. The victory was over Southwest Baptist in a sweep, 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-28).

In game one Northwest was down by four, 17-21 and came back to tie the game up at 23 and did not lose the lead the rest of the way. In game two, Northwest used an 18-6 run, after they were down by as much as eight points. The Northwest Bearcats finally took the lead at 23-22, after being down most of the game. In the match there were 25 ties and 12 lead changes.

Northwest used 53 team kills, a .300 attack percent, only 14 errors, but were hampered with 14 service errors in the match.

The Northwest Bearcats were led by sophomore Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) with 14 kills and her third straight match over a .400 attack percentage. Cummings posted a .429, while junior MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) had had the team high .448 attack percent and 14 kills.

Junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) had 12 kills and .379 attack percentage and was third on the team in points with 12.5. The team leaders were Cummings and Heston with 17 scored.

The setters, junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa) had 25 and 17 assists respectively.

Northwest moved to 8-11 overall and 1-6 in the MIAA, while Southwest Baptist goes to 4-18 overall and 0-7 in the conference. The Northwest Bearcats will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday) against Missouri Southern at 1 p.m.
