Volleyball Falls in Five to Missouri Western
Maryville, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team came back from two games down to force a fifth game tonight against Missouri Western, but fell 2-3 (26-30, 25-30, 30-22, 30-27, 13-15).
Neither team had a secure lead throughout the match, as there were 11 ties and six lead changes in game one. In game two there were also 11 ties and five lead changes, but it went down from there. In the final three games there were a combined 11 ties and 10 lead changes.
In the opening game junior MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) knocked down four straight kills, which helped her team high total of 19. Heston also had a match high .485 attack percent and a team high 20 points.
The Bearcats also had three others in double digit kills, with sophomore Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) chipping in with 15, fellow classmate Rachel Spensley (Dubuque, Iowa) had 14 along with junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa).
Trowbridge, Spensley and junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) all had double doubles in the match. It was Trowbridge's fourth of the season, Hankins' third and Spensley's first of the year.
Hankins had 29 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore setter Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa) had 29 assists as well -- which moved her alone into seventh place at Northwest career assists with 1,187.
Stilwell is now 342 away from moving into a tie for sixth place at Northwest in career assists.
The Bearcats fall to 6-9 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA, while Missouri Western improves to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. Up next for Northwest they will travel up to Boone, Iowa to play Upper Iowa University on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m.
