Volleyball Splits Second Day at Mo. West Invitational
St. Joseph, Mo.--The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team split the second day of the Missouri Western Ramada Inn Invitational yesterday.
In the first match of the afternoon the Bearcats upset No. 10 Fort Hays State in four games (30-25, 30-28, 21-30, 34-32). In the second match of the afternoon Northwest fell to the University of Central Oklahoma in straight games (17-30, 20-30, 30-17).
In the Bearcats win they were led by junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) 20 kills, sophomore's Rachel Spensley (Dubuque, Iowa) and Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) 15 and 11 kills respectively.
The first double double of the season for Northwest also came about in the win over Fort Hays. Junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) had 16 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa) had 20 assists and 10 digs.
The win against Fort Hays is the first over a ranked team in seven previous tries, since 2004.
In the final match of the Missouri Western Invitational the Bearcats were unable to get any offense going. Northwest was forced into 36 attack errors, seven service errors and seven reception errors.
The Bearcats will now play three matches down in Florida starting on Wednesday Sept. 7 against Florida Southern (0-2 all-time), Friday Sept. 9 at Saint. Leo (first meeting) and Saturday Sept. 10 at Tampa (0-1 all-time).
