Volleyball Splits First Day at Mo. West Invitational
Joplin, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team moved to 3-0 after a convincing win over Quincy University yesterday afternoon at the Missouri Southern Invitational.
The Bearcats took advantage of 14 service errors by Quincy and a .000 attack percent to win their third straight of the season. Northwest also forced Quincy into 22 errors to go along with only 22 kills, while the 'Cats used 32 kills and 13 service aces in the win.
For the Bearcats junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) had a match high 13 kills and a match high .417 attack percent. Sophomore classmates Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) and Nicole Wojtowicz (Omaha, Neb.) had six kills each.
Northwest also used a combined 23 assists from junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa), Hankins had 16, while Stilwell came in with seven.
The 3-0 start for the Bearcats is their best since 2000.
In the final match of the Missouri Southern Invitational the Bearcats played No.21 Augustana College (S.D.), and lost 3-0.
Northwest had a .140 attack percent in the match, while Augustana used a .270 in the win. Augustana also used 11 service aces and 31 assists from Angie Hummel, while the team had 38, just six more than the 'Cats.
Hankins and Stilwell had 15 and 12 assists respectively -- while Trowbridge had a match high 18 kills. Hankins and junior MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) each had a team high two service aces.
Up next for the Bearcats is the Missouri Western Ramada Inn Invitational in St. Joseph. Northwest will play West Florida in first match on Friday Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. and South Dakota at 6 p.m. On Saturday the Bearcats will play Fort Hays State at 12 p.m. and Central Oklahoma at 4 p.m.
