
MARYVILLE, Mo. -The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team came back from a 22-30 game one loss to defeat Missouri Western St. in four games.
The Griffons took an 8-3 lead in the first game and never surrendered it out-hitting the Bearcats .162 to .000.
Game two started off similar to game one until Northwest went on a four point run to lead Mo. Western 17-12. The Griffons could not catch back up and NWMSU took the 30-25 win. They hit .410 attack percentage in game two and had only three service errors.
Freshman Lauren Cummings came out in the third game and had six kills and two blocks to take the Bearcats to a 23-17 lead. The Griffons battled back to within three points of Northwest but fell just short in a 27-30 loss.
The third game was dominated by the 'Cats. Mo. Western lagged behind 26-12 but regained composure and went on a seven point run. The Bearcats fought back and won the game 30-23.
Northwest hit .230 for the match while errors brought Mo. Western down to .183 hitting percentage. Northwest improved to 13-15 overall and 4-8 in the conference while Missouri Western dropped to 11-10 overall and 2-8 in the MIAA.
Cummings ended the game with game high 19 kills and 7 total blocks. Sarah Trowbridge (12 kills, 18 digs), Mackenzie Heston (13 kills, 10 digs) and Katie Stilwell (58 assists, 11 digs) recorded double-doubles for the Bearcats.
Lauren Kraci and Shelly Chiles led the Griffons with 17 kills each.
The Bearcats travel to No. 3 Truman State this weekend for a 5:00 match-up on Sat., Oct. 23.
