'Cats Get By Southwest Baptist, 3-1 on the Road

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Winning Game 1 for the first time in seven matches, the Northwest Missouri State volleyball squad hung on for a 3-1 MIAA win this evening versus Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats last win in the opening frame was against Southern Arkansas, Sept. 11.

Scores were 30-24, 28-30, 30-24, 30-22 from the Meyer Wellness Gym.

Northwest improves to 11-10 overall and 3-4 in the MIAA. Southwest Baptist, who notched its first MIAA game victory of 2004, drops to 1-17 overall and 0-7 in league play.

"Southwest is an improving club," said head coach Lori Slight. "I was disappointed in our Game 2 loss. We need to improve and work hard as a team. We have to learn how to win games in an efficient fashion."

The 'Cats posted 73 kills overall and a .294 (73-25-163) hitting percentage. The kills are the most since they went for 75 aginst Benedictine, Sept. 1 - a stretch of 16 matches. The hitting is the highest mark since a .363 clip against Ouachita Baptist, Sept. 11.

Five Bearcat performers were over the 10-kill plateau with Allison Hyland leading the way with 16. Mackenzie Heston, the team leader with 3.00 kills per game on the year, added 15 and 11 digs while Steph Suntken ended with 14 and a game-high .444 (14-2-27) hitting mark.

Caylee Meyer recorded 33 assists and narrowly missed a double-double with 9 digs. Amy D'Amato had a game-high 19 digs.

Southwest Baptist hit just .153 (47-24-150) for the match and a dismal -.069 (3-5-29) in Game 1. Jenny Madrid led all players with 20 kills as she was the only Bearcat to reach the double-digit mark.

Northwest, who has now won two road MIAA matches for the first time since it got by Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern during the 2000 campaign, travels to Missouri Southern tomorrow (Saturday) for a 12:00 p.m. match.
