Northwest Breaks Losing Streak

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State defeated Pittsburg State tonight, breaking their four-game losing streak. The Bearcats reclaimed their .500 status as they improved their record to 10-10 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. PSU dropped to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA.

The Gorillas led for the entire first game after an 0-1 hole. Northwest gained to within one point at 21-22 after a 5-0 spurt fueled by Allison Hyland's two straight kills. Pitt State scored the final four points to win the game, 30-25.

Northwest lagged behind in game two until a 15-9 run to gain their first lead at 25-24. Mackenzie Heston notched three of the final four points for the Bearcats giving them the 30-27 win.

The 'Cats went on a 7-2 run to take a 12-9 lead in game three. The Gorillas answered back with an 11-1 run, including nine straight points. NWMSU went up 25-24 after blocks by Heston and Steph Suntken then used a 4-2 spurt to take game three 30-28.

After Pittsburg State scored the first four points of the fourth game, Northwest went on an 11-1 run to go up 11-5. Pittsburg came back to tie the score at 14. Sarah Trowbridge had two service aces and Lauren Cummings hit two kills to go up 26-23. A Heston knock-down sealed the win as Northwest scored four of the last five points for the 30-25 win.

The Bearcats hit .209 (57-22-168) for the match, first time in five matches to hit over .200. They also had 13 total blocks and 11 service aces. Pittsburg State hit only .106 (57-39-170).

Sarah Trowbridge secured her sixth double-double for the season with 11kills and 12 digs. Teammate Caylee Meyer had 25 assists and 12 digs to record her first double-double for the Bearcats. Steph Suntken hit .474 (9-0-19) with no hitting errors and Allison Hyland was close behind hitting .345 (13-3-29).

Pittsburg State's Elizabeth Anyigor had an amazing 29 kills, hitting .310 to lead the Gorillas offensively. Libero, Pam Radell claimed 32 digs.

The Bearcats travel south this weekend (Oct. 1-2) to Southwest Baptist on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Missouri Southern State on Saturday at noon
