Bearcats Fall to No. 3 Truman State
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State lost to undefeated No. 3 Truman State tonight in three games. The loss drops Northwest below .500 for the season with a record of 9-10 and 1-4 in the MIAA. Truman State betters its record to 13-0 and 4-0 in the MIAA.
The Bearcats went up early in game one with a 6-1 run to lead 13-10. Truman climbed back with runs of 5-0 and 6-0 to take a 24-20 lead it would not give up. The Bulldogs held off the 'Cats with a 30-25 win in the first game.
The second game went back and forth until Truman notched five straight points to take a 10-4 advantage. Northwest cut the margin to two points at 11-13 but Truman scored six of the next eight points to settle in for a comfortable 19-13 lead. With the score at 22-18, Truman went on an 8-1 run to close out the game and win 30-19.
Northwest went up by a 4-2 count early in game three, ignited by kills from Mackenzie Heston and Sarah Trowbridge. The Bulldogs forced a 'Cat timeout as it scored five consecutive points to go up 11-8. The visitors increased their advantage to 19-12 and coasted to the conference win with a 30-22 score.
The Bearcats had 42 kills to Truman's 39 but were hurt by 16 service errors and 27 attack errors. The Bulldogs held the 'Cats to .107 hitting percentage.
Northwest's Mackenzie Heston captured her fourth double-double on the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. Sarah Trowbridge put down 11 kills and dug 15 balls for her fifth double-double this year.
Truman was led by Jessica Sears hitting .417 attack percentage (13-3-24) and Tiffany Graham added seven kills.
The Bearcats play Pittsburg State at home Wed., Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. Northwest travels south to Bolivar, Mo. for a match-up against MIAA foe Southwest Baptist Fri., Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. and then on to Joplin, Mo. to play Missouri Southern State Sat., Oct. 2 at noon.
