Northwest Takes Down Benedictine, 3-1
ATCHISON, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State volleyball won its third straight match after setting down Benedictine, 3-1, tonight in non-league play. Scores were 30-32, 30-21, 30-28 and 30-18. It is the first three-match winning streak since 2000 - Sept. 2, 6, 8.
Moving to 19-7 all-time against Benedictine, the Bearcats finished with a .309 (75-24-165) hitting percentage thanks to red-hot Games 3 & 4. They hit for nearly a .400 clip (.395) in each of the final two games.
Defensively, the 'Cats recorded 14.0 team blocks and held Benedictine to just a .188 (47-20-144) hitting mark.
Northwest was led by the play of freshman Rachel Spensley (Dubuque, Iowa). A night after going for 13 kills and 11 digs, Spensley posted a team-high 17 kills, nine digs and 20.5 points. Sophomore MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) followed on the kills chart with 16 while freshman Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) reached 13 and senior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) had 12.
Fresh off a 67-assist performance against South Dakota yesterday, freshman setter Katie Stilwell (West Des Moines, Iowa) came away with 51 assists.
Northwest improves to 3-3 overall on the season and will compete at the Missouri Western Tournament, Sept. 3-4. The 'Cats stay busy with four matches during the event.
