Bearcat Volleyball Adds Four Student-Athletes
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State University head volleyball coach Lori DeJongh-Slight has announced the signing of four student-athletes to national letters-of-intent. The following is a look at these four Bearcat signings:
Lauren Cummings, 6-0, Middle Hitter, Fr.
Ankeny, Iowa (Ankeny HS)
High School - Two-year starter for Ankeny High School ... Led the Hawkettes to a 77-7 record the past two seaons and two state runner-up finishes ... First-Team Class 4A All-State and All-State Elite last season ... Two-time first-team all-conference honoree ... Recorded a career hitting percentage of .361 with 459 kills in her high school career ... Notched 200 blocks in the past two seasons.
Coach DeJongh-Slight Says - "Lauren is an outstanding jumper. Lauren will be coming in touching close to 10-foot on her vertical jump. That's a mark that a Division I recruit would hit. She will bring a lot of diversity to our team with her athleticism. I think she can come in and start. She possesses all the qualities we need in a starter. It will all depend on team chemistry and what role she fits into on the team."
Caylee Meyer, 5-8, Setter, Jr.
Des Moines, Iowa (Indian Hills CC)
Previous School - Earned all-region Most Valuable Player honors at Indian Hills Community College last season ... Also named Academic All-America at Indian Hills ... Led her team to 76-15 record the past two seasons.
High School - Earned all-district honors as a senior at Lincoln High School in Des Moines in 2001.
Coach DeJongh-Slight Says - "I'm extremely excited about Caylee. She was a dominant setter in her conference. With the fast tempo and a lot of the changes we're making, she should be able to step right in and contribute. She's an extremely smart setter and can get the ball to any hitter. She has all the tools to help us in the setter position."
Carly Setterlund, 6-2, Middle Hitter, Fr.
Omaha, Neb. (Westside HS)
High School - Earned honorable mention all-state honors the past two seasons at Westside High Schol in Omaha ... Named second-team all-metro as a senior and honorabe mention all-metro as a junior ... Named to the Academic All-State team in 2002 and 2003.
Coach DeJongh-Slight Says - "Carly is raw, but in two years people are going to wonder why they didn't pick her up. She's a bundle of energy and potential, who just needs some experience. In a year or two, she is definitely going to do good things for us."
Rachel Spensley, 5-9, Outside Hitter, Fr.,
Dubuque, Iowa (Dubuque HS)
High School - Two-time second-team all-state selection for Dubuque High School ... Named third-team all-state as a sophomore ... Three-time all-conference selection, earning second-team honors as a freshman ... Three-time all-area honoree, taking second-team as a freshman ... Four-year letterwinner in volleyball ... Three-year track and field letterwinner.
Coach DeJongh-Slight Says - "Every time I talk to Rachel, she's more excited about joining the program. She can hit, block, pass and serve. She's the kind of player who makes your program better, just by having her. She is willing to do any job you ask her to. She'll give us depth at a lot of positions that we haven't had before. Rachel is one of those kids you want to have on the court. She brings her team to a different level."
