Bearcats Drop Match to Missouri Western, 3-0
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team fell to Missouri Western, 3-0, Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena. Game scores were 19-30, 21-30 and 19-30. With the win, the Griffons improve to 7-4 on the year, 1-3 in conference play. The loss extends the Bearcats' losing streak to 14 games, dropping the team's record to 2-14 overall, 0-4 in the MIAA.
The two teams came out swinging in game one, trading kills on the first two points of the game. Then the Griffon defense clamped down, holding the 'Cats to a .061 attack percentage in game one. Missouri Western took game one, 30-19.
Game two began much the same way as game one. The two teams traded points before the Griffons went on a run. The 'Cats fought back to hang close but were unable to overtake Missouri Western, which took game two, 30-21.
In game three, the 'Cats battled to keep the score close, posting their highest attack percentage of the night at .226. However, the Griffons big arms up front hit a robust .400 en route to taking game three, 30-19, and the match, 3-0.
Newcomers Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) and Mackenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) each tallied nine kills for the 'Cats in the loss.
Alyssa Berg set the pace for the Griffons, tallying 13 kills, while Becky Brosnahan added 11 kills. Blair Lehr added 11 digs for the Griffons.
The 'Cats will be back in action Friday, Sept. 26, traveling to Kirskville to take on the No. 8 Truman Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
