Bearcats Fall to Emporia State in Home Opener
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team fell to Emporia State, 3-0, Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena in the team's home opener. Game scores were 30-32, 21-30 and 27-30. The loss is the 11th straight and moves the Bearcats' record to 2-11, 0-1 in the MIAA.
Both teams came out strong, using solid hitting and timely serving. The first game remained close throughout, but the 'Cats were unable to top the Hornets, dropping game one, 30-32. Northwest fell behind early in the second game and was unable to overcome the early deficit. The Bearcats lost game two, 21-30. Game three saw Northwest fall behind, once again, but the 'Cats battled back and led throughout much of the game. However, Northwest could not force another game, falling, 27-30.
For the 'Cats, freshman MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) led the way with 22 kills and 10 digs. Newcomer Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) added 14 kills and nine digs, and senior Holli Gillette (Lincoln, Neb.) had 41 assists.
Leah Griswold set the pace for the Hornets, notching 17 kills and 18 digs. Mandy Stratton and Kim Edwards each added 10 digs in the win.
The 'Cats will be back in action Friday, Sept. 19, as they travel to Topeka to take on No. 22 Washburn at 7 p.m. Saturday, Northwest will face No. 20 Central Missouri State in Warrensburg at 1 p.m.
