OMAHA, Neb. - The Northwest volleyball team's losing streak now stands at 10 after four losses this weekend at the North Central Region Crossover Classic hosted by the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Northwest opened the tournament Friday, facing the University of North Dakota. Despite strong hitting from freshmen Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) and MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa), the 'Cats fell, 3-1. Trowbridge finished the match with 14 kills and 16 digs, and Heston added 11 kills and 10 digs.
In Friday's nightcap, the Bearcats faced Northern (S.Dakota) State. Northwest pushed NSU to five games and were two points away from snapping the losing streak, but were unable to finish off the Wolves. The 'Cats lost, 3-2. Transfer Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) led the way with 22 kills and 21 digs. She was one of five Bearcats to tally double-digit kills.
Saturday morning began with Northwest going up against No. 9 Minnesota-Duluth. The 'Cats came out determined but were unable to stop UMD, falling, 3-0. Northwest wrapped up its stay in Omaha, taking on Southwest (Minn.) State. The two teams traded points throughout much of the match, but in the end, it was SSU coming away with a 3-0 win.
The 'Cats will be back in action in the 2003 home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 17. The night also marks the beginning of conference play, as Northwest takes on MIAA foe Emporia State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
