Bearcats Goes 0-4 at Burger King Classic

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Northwest volleyball team wrapped up the Burger King Classic hosted by South Dakota State and Southwest (Minn.) State Saturday, dropping matches to Concordia (Minn.) and St. Cloud (Minn.) State. On Friday, the 'Cats fell to both South Dakota State and National American (S. Dakota). Northwest's record now stands at 2-6 on the season.

Friday, the 'Cats opened with No. 15 South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. Northwest came out strong but was unable to stop the high-powered Jackrabbit offense, falling 3-0. Game scores were 24-30, 19-30, 22-30. Later that day, Northwest lost to the No. 1 team in the NAIA, National American, 3-0. Freshman Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) led the way with 13 kills and eight digs against SDSU and eight kills and six digs against National American.

Saturday's action shifted to Marshall, Minn., on the campus of Southwest (Minn.) State. The Northwest opened the day against Concordia (Minn.). The 'Cats came out strong, using timely hitting and a determined defense, but could not hold off the Golden Bears, dropping the match, 3-0. Game scores were 24-30, 29-31, 23-30. In the nightcap, Northwest went up against St. Cloud (Minn.) State in the final match of the tournament. The 'Cats lost the match, 3-0, and game scores were 24-30, 25-30, 11-30.

Once again, Trowbridge led the charge, notching 10 kills and eight digs against Concordia and eight kills and six digs versus St. Cloud State. Fellow freshman MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) added nine kills and 14 digs against the Golden Bears and nine kills and five digs against the Huskies of St. Cloud State.

The 'Cats will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Omaha, Neb., to participate in the Nebraska-Omaha Tournament on Friday and Saturday before their home opener against conference foe Emporia State on Sept. 17.
