Bearcats Go 2-2 at Quincy Invite

QUINCY, Ill . -The Northwest Missouri State women's volleyball team opened the 2003 season this weekend at the Quincy Invitational Tournament in Quincy, Ill., going 2-2 in the round-robin format. The 'Cats picked up wins of Lake Superior State (Mich.) and Saginaw Valley State (Mich.). Freshman MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) recorded 60 kills and 53 digs for the weekend, earning her all-tournament honors.

In Saturday's first game, the 'Cats faced a toughUniversity of Missouri-St. Louis team. Northwest dropped the first game before coming back to win games two and three. Despite strong hitting and tough defense, the 'Cats were unable to hold off the Riverwomen, dropping the fourth and fifth games and the match, 3-2. Newcomer Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) notched 15 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) added 13 kills and 10 digs. Junior Melea Zacharias (Parkersburg, Iowa) recorded 12 kills and 11 digs.

In the nightcap, Northwest took on host Quincy. The 'Cats came out strong in game one, but were unable to top a strong Lady Hawk team, losing the match, 3-0. Trowbridge had nine kills and 13 digs, while while Heston added nine kills, seven digs and four block assists.

On Friday morning, the 'Cats used double-doubles from three newcomers to defeat Lake Superior State, 3-1, in the tournament opener. Heston led the way with 16 kills, 17 digs and four block assists. Fellow freshman Trowbridge added 13 kills and 17 digs, while Suntken chipped in with 11 kills and 10 digs.

In the second game of the day, the 'Cats downed Saginaw Valley State (Mich.), 3-1, to begin the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2000 season. Once again Heston and Trowbridge led the charge. Each notched 18 kills, while Trowbridge added 18 digs and Heston had 15. Suntken tallied another double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs.

The 'Cats will be back in action next weekend as they travel to South Dakota and Minnesota to participate in the Burger King Classic hosted by South Dakota State University and Southwest State (Minn.) University.
