'Cats Fall to No. 18 Pitt State
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team fell to the No. 18 Pittsburg State, 3-0, on senior night Wednesday night in Bearcat Arena. Game scores were 23-30, 20-30 and 25-30. With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 4-26 on the season, 1-13 in the MIAA.
In game one, the 'Cats came out strong against a tough Pittsburg State team. Both teams used solid hitting and strong defense to keep the game close. A late Pitt State run, however, opened the door for the Gorillas, who took game one, 30-23.
The Gorillas got out to a fast start in game two, but the Bearcats would not quit. Behind solid front row play, Northwest hung tough but was unable to catch the Gorillas. Pittsburg State took game two, 30-20.
In game three, the two teams stayed close throughout. Behind strong serving from both sides, neither team led by more than a couple of points throughout much of the game. However, the Gorillas attack proved to be too much for the Bearcats, with Pittsburg State taking game three, 30-25, and the match, 3-0.
Leading the way for the 'Cats was senior Leah Day (Independence, Mo.) and freshman Mackenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) with 10 kills each. Heston also added 21 digs, two solo blocks and two block assists. Senior Holli Gillette (Lincoln, Neb.) chipped in the 18 digs, while senior Carrie Johnson (Tripoli, Iowa) added 13 digs and three service aces.
The Bearcats will wrap up the 2003 season on the road this weekend. Friday night the 'Cats head to Bolivar, Mo., to take on Southwest Baptist in a 7 p.m. game. Saturday, the Bearcats will be in Joplin, taking on Missouri Southern at Noon.
