Bearcats Fall to No. 5 Truman State
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team fell to the No. 5 Truman State Bulldogs, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Arena. Game scores were 22-30, 17-30 and 22-30. The loss drops the Bearcats' record to 4-25 on the season, 1-12 in the MIAA.
In the first game, the Bearcats jumped out to an early lead behind strong serving by senior Carrie Johnson (Tripoli, Iowa) and solid hitting by the Northwest front line. Truman State began to battle back, taking advantage of several Bearcat errors. The two teams continued to battle through much of the first game before the Bulldogs scored several consecutive points to pull away from the 'Cats. Truman State took game one, 30-22.
Game two started out as a very close contest, before the Bulldogs went on a run to break the game wide open. The 'Cats battled but were unable to catch Truman State, who took game two, 30-17.
In game three, the Bulldogs raced out to an early lead, but the Bearcats refused to go quietly. Late in the game, strong serving by junior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) brought the 'Cats to within five before Truman State put the game away, taking game three, 30-22, and the match, 3-0.
Freshman Mackenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) led the 'Cats with 10 kills, nine digs, two solo blocks and four block assists. Suntken chipped in with 15 digs and eight block assists.
The 'Cats will play the final home game of the season and honor this year's senior class Wednesday night. Conference foe Pittsburg State will visit Bearcat Arena; first serve is set for 7 p.m.
