Northwest Falls to Rival Griffons
ST. JOSEPH , Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team fell to rival Missouri Western, 3-0, in St. Joseph. Game scores were 28-30, 23-30 and 17-30. With the loss, the 'Cats move to 4-24 on the season, 1-11 on conference play.
Game one was a tightly contested match up. Both teams came out swinging and playing solid defense. A couple of key errors late in the game opened the door for Western. The Griffons stayed strong to take game one, 30-28.
Defense was the name of the game in the second stanza. The game began with two big block assists by junior Melea Zacharias (Parkersburg, Iowa) and freshman Mackenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa). The 'Cats built a five-point lead before the Griffons began their comeback. The two teams stayed close until late in the game when Missouri Western rallied to take game two, 30-23.
In game three, the Griffons came out strong. Western used strong hitting and solid defense against a young Northwest team to cruise to a 30-17 game three win, and a 3-0 match loss.
Zacharias led the way for the 'Cats with 10, two service aces and two block assists. Heston came in with eight kills and 11 digs. Senior Carrie Johnson (Tripoli, Iowa) added 14 digs. Junior Steph Suntken tallied seven kills, two solo blocks and three block assists.
Northwest will be back in action Saturday, hosting No. 5 Truman State at 1 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
