Bearcats Fall to No. 19 Jennies
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team fell to No. 19 Central Missouri State, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in Bearcat Arena. Game scores were 19-30, 15-30 and 21-30. With the loss, the 'Cats fall to 4-23 on the season, 1-10 in the MIAA.
The Bearcats came out in game one determined to stay with the nationally ranked Jennies. The game remained close throughout much of the early going. A late run by the Jennies behind the hot serving of Elyse Mohme put the game out of reach for the 'Cats. Central Missouri took game one, 30-19.
Game two was also close early, but the Jennies took advantage of some key errors by the 'Cats to build a large lead. Though the 'Cats attempted to come back, the hard-hitting Jennies could not be caught, taking game two, 30-15.
In game three, the Jennies jumped out to an early lead, using strong serving, hot hitting and solid defense. Despite a late run by the 'Cats, the Jennies held on to win game three, 30-21, and the match, 3-0.
Junior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) paced the 'Cats with 15 kills, seven digs and four block assists. Junior Melea Zacharias (Parkersburg, Iowa) added eight kills and four digs. Senior Leah Day (Independence, Mo.) chipped in 10 digs.
The 'Cats will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 22, as they travel to St. Joseph to take on rival Missouri Western. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
