Bearcats Drop Match to No. 21 Washburn
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team fell to No. 21 Washburn, 3-0, Friday night in Bearcat Arena. Game scores were 29-31, 11-30 and 21-30. With the loss, the 'Cats fall to 4-22 on the season, 1-9 in the MIAA.
The Bearcats came out strong in the first game, pushing Washburn to the edge. With the Lady Blues leading 12-6, junior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) served the team back into the game. The two teams traded points and the lead several time throughout the game. The 'Cats were at game point before giving up three consecutive points to Washburn, who took game one, 31-29.
In game two, the Lady Blues came out hot, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead. The 'Cats worked to get back into the game, but some tough luck for the Bearcats paved the way for a game two Washburn victory, 30-11.
Game three started much the same as game two. Washburn jumped out to an early lead, which the Bearcats were never able to overcome. Northwest was held to a .060 hitting percentage by a stiff Lady Blue defense. Washburn took game three, 30-21, and the match, 3-0.
Leading the way for the 'Cats was freshman Mackenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) with 10 kills, 10 digs and five block assists. Suntken added nine kills, seven digs, two solo blocks and two block assists. Junior Melea Zacharias (Parkersburg, Iowa) chipped in with three block assists.
The Bearcats will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 18, hosting the No. 19 Central Missouri State Jennies. First serve is set for Noon at Bearcat Arena.
