'Cats Fall at Emporia
EMPORIA, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team dropped a tough match to Emporia State, 3-0, Wednesday night at W.L. White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. Game scores were 12-30, 28-30 and 26-30. With the loss, the 'Cats fall to 4-21 on the season, 1-8 in the MIAA.
In the first game, both teams came out playing strong. Many of the early points were scored after long rallies, but a 14-1 run by Emporia put the game out of reach for the 'Cats. The Hornets took game one, 30-12.
Game two saw the Bearcats jump out to an early 8-2 lead, but several key errors by the 'Cats opened the door for an Emporia comeback. The two teams stayed close throughout the second stanza, but in the end Emporia had just enough to take game two, 30-28.
Game three was another tightly contested contest. Both teams struggled hitting the ball and played solid defense. The 'Cats ran into some tough luck in the third game, which paved the way for Emporia. The Hornets took game three, 30-26, and the match, 3-0.
Junior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) and freshman Mackenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) paced the 'Cats with nine kills each. Suntken added 24 digs and three block assists, while Heston tallied 15 digs and five block assists. Senior Carrie Johnson (Tripoli, Iowa) chipped in with 12 digs, and fellow senior Leah Day (Independence, Mo.) added 10 digs and two block assists.
The 'Cats will be back in action Friday, taking on Washburn at 7 p.m., in Bearcat Arena. Northwest will host Central Missouri State Saturday at Noon.
