'Cats Split on Opening Day at Henderson Tourney

ARKADELPHIA, Ark . -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team opened the Henderson State Tournament by defeating Arkansas Tech, 3-1, Friday afternoon. Game scores were 30-20, 29-31, 34-32 and 30-22. In the nightcap, the Bearcats fell to Harding University, 3-0. Game scores were 16-30, 23-30 and 20-30.

The 'Cats used strong hitting and solid defense in the opening match to down Arkansas Tech. Leading the way for Northwest was junior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) with 21 kills, 16 digs, four block assists and five service aces. Senior Leah Day (Independence, Mo.) added 13 kills, seven digs, two block assists and two service aces. Freshman Mackenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) tallied 17 kills, 12 digs, two solo blocks and two block assists.

In the second match, the 'Cats faced a tough Harding team that slowed down the Northwest offense. Suntken led the way, once again, recording 12 kills, eight digs and six block assists. Day added 13 digs.

The 'Cats now stand at 4-18 on the season and will continue the tournament on Saturday. Northwest will face North Alabama and host Henderson to wrap up the tournament.
