Bearcats Drop Match to Missouri Southern
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match to Missouri Southern, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Arena. Game scores were 25-30, 21-30 and 21-30. With the loss, the 'Cats fall to 3-17 on the season, 1-7 in the MIAA.
Game one saw both teams come out swinging. The score remained close throughout the game, with the teams trading point and the lead changing hands numerous times. Costly attack errors by the Bearcats near the end of the first game gave Southern the breaks they needed to grab game one, 30-25.
In game two, senior Holli Gillette (Lincoln, Neb.) served the 'Cats to a 7-1 lead before the Lions began to claw their way back. Both teams suffered from poor hitting the second stanza, but in the end, Missouri Southern was able to edge out the 'Cats, taking game two, 30-21.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before the 'Cats got on the scoreboard. The Bearcats got as close as three points behind the Lions, but were unable to overtake hot-hitting Missouri Southern. The Lions won game three, 30-21, and the match, 3-0.
Junior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) led the way for the 'Cats, tallying 12 kills and 17 digs to go along with two block assists. Freshman Amy D'Amato (Steilacoom, Wash.) chipped in with 11 digs, while Gillette added two service aces.
The 'Cats will be back in action next weekend, as they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., to participate in the Henderson State Tournament.
