'Cats Down SBU to Snap Losing Streak
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team snapped its 16-game losing streak, defeating Southwest Baptist, 3-0, Friday night at Bearcat Arena. Game scores were 30-21, 30-27 and 30-18. The win moves the 'Cats to 3-16 on the season, 1-6 in the MIAA.
Game one started out slowly for Northwest, with SBU jumping out to an early lead. Fueled by three consecutive service aces by Melea Zacharias (Parkersburg, Iowa), the Bearcats came back to take a lead en route to a 30-21 game one victory.
The two teams played close throughout game two, trading points and the lead numerous times. The Bearcats used strong serving, timely hitting and good defense to hold off Southwest Baptist, taking game two, 30-27.
In game three, the Northwest defense tightened up. The 'Cats held SBU to only seven kills and an attack percentage of .000 in the third stanza. A motivated Bearcat team put away 15 kills to win the third game, 30-18, and the match, 3-0.
The 'Cats were led by junior Steph Suntken (Indianola, Iowa) with 16 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Mackenzie Heston added 10 kills and eight digs. Zacharias finished with 11 digs and five service aces in the victory.
The 'Cats will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 4, taking on the Missouri Southern Lions. First serve is set for Noon at Bearcat Arena.
