Bearcat men highlight Concordia Classic
SEWARD, Neb. – Porter Groves and Eli Smith highlighted the day at the Concordia Classic Friday for the Northwest Missouri State track and field teams.
For Groves it was his performance in the triple jump that earned him a NCAA provisional mark and the second best indoor jump of his career. Groves finished with a mark of 47-7.25 which ranks him in the top 20 in the nation and is the third best distance in the MIAA.
Also for the Bearcat men, Eli Smith captured the 400-meter dash title with a time of 49.73. Smith is one of six Northwest men to have earned NCAA provisional times this season with his time at the Cyclone Holiday Preview in December.
Desmond Jackson and Groves also raced to top 15 finishes in the 60-meter dash. Jackson with a time of 7.14 and Groves’ time of 7.16 missed the provisional mark of 6.90.
On the women’s side Samantha Fender raced to a fourth place finish in the 60-meter dash. Fender narrowly missed the provisional time (7.78) as her finals time of 7.95 earned her the top five finish.
Emilee Messer also raced to a top five finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:22.91.
The Bearcat women also saw Selina Kendall miss a provisional mark by inches as her jump of 4-11.75 gave her a 13th place finish in a crowded high jump field.
