Bearcats complete day one at Nebraska

Day 1 Results

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s and women’s track and field team had 10 players earn top 10 finishes on the first day of the 2013 Holiday Inn Invitational Friday at the Devaney Sports Center.

Emilee Messer had the highest finish for the Bearcats on Friday racing to a runner-up finish in the 1000-meter run. Messer finished with a time of 3:13.88 and was just seven seconds behind Jelena Andjelkovic of Nebraska, who took home the title.

A pair of Bearcat women just missed provisional marks led by Jordan Esry in the 3000-meter run. Esry finished with a time of 10:27.79 missing the NCAA mark of 10:05.00 to finish sixth. Teammates Taylor Woodruff finished ninth as Jessica Johnson earned a 14th place finish with times of 11:04.18 and 11:47.56 respectively.

Senior Amanda Cushing was also just two minutes shy of a NCAA provisional, as she finished the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:54.71. Cushing’s time also earned her a fifth place finish for Northwest.

Junior Seth Staashelm and freshman Nolan Zimmer were two Bearcats on the men’s side to earn top 10 finishes and just miss a provisional mark.

Staashelm finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.90 meters (6-02.75) as teammate Logan Halloran earned a sixth place finish.

Zimmer raced to his ninth place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:53.05, just missing the NCAA mark of 8:28.00. Jake Henry finished 13th with a time of 9:07.14 with Kit Anderson racing to a 15th place finish with a time of 9:18.24 in the 3000-meter run as well.

Also earning a top 10 finish for Northwest was Johnny Harley with a time of 16:17.61 in the 5000-meter run.

The second day of action will start at noon tomorrow with the men's pole vault, men's triple jump, women's shot put and women's 60-meter hurdles final. The last running even of the day, the men's 4x400 meter relay, is slated for 3:55 p.m.
