Bearcat trio heads to NCAA Championships
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s track and field team has qualified three individuals in three events for the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships announced by the NCAA Tuesday.
Senior Kate Walter earned a spot in the hammer throw and will be joined at the championships (May 24-26) in Pueblo, Colo., by juniors Brittany Poole and Lekiesha McKnight. Poole will race in the 3000-meter steeplechase while McKnight will compete in the shot put.
Walter grabbed an automatic mark in April at the Pittsburg State Gorilla Classic with a throw of 190’ 7”, but would improve on that distance with a record setting throw at the MIAA Outdoor Championships in early May. The Independence, Mo., native would break her own record this last weekend at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Chicago with a throw of 193’ 4” ranking her fifth in the hammer.
Poole put her name on the automatic list at the Drake Relays, running to a 10:31.13 finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The junior also won the event at the MIAA Outdoor Championships earlier this month and is seeded ninth.
McKnight earned her spot with a mark of 48’ 2.5” in the final weekend at the Dr. Keeler Invitational and ranks ninth overall. McKnight recorded a provisional throw in her first meet of the spring season at the Emporia State Spring Open, as she was coming off a sixth place performance at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. McKnight finished fourth at the MIAA Championships before throwing the second best distance in Northwest history last weekend.
Competition will get under way May 24 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl on the campus of Colorado State-Pueblo.
