Fender places third at ESU Multis


EMPORIA, Kan. – A pair of Bearcats were able to climb into contention Friday at the ESU Open Multis highlighted by Samantha Fender’s third place finish in a MIAA crowded field at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State.

Fender jumped into the top five on the second day of competition after coming in second in the javelin throw and third in the 800-meters. Fender finished third behind Emily Paullus of Missouri Southern and champion Brandi Winchester of Nebraska-Kearney.

Jessica Hugo fell to fourth after a strong first day. Hugo finished third in the shot put and tied for second in the high jump with teammate Fender. Hugo tallied 3,908 points only 109 points shy of Fender’s 4,017.

Adrienne Cornelius and Hannah Churchman rounded out the Bearcats squad competing in the heptathlon. Cornelius finished seventh followed by Churchman in eighth.
