Walter earns automatic mark at Mizzou Relays
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State senior Kate Walter sealed her spot at the national championships with an automatic qualifying mark in the shot put over the weekend at the Mizzou Relays.
Walter, who set a meet record at Emporia State in the discus throw, was the highest non-Division I thrower in the shot put recording a seventh place finish. Walter’s mark of 44-09.50 was a personal best and the fourth best outdoor mark in Northwest history. The senior’s throw in the discus was also a provisional mark hopefully earning her a second spot at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in late May.
Overall, on the women’s side Northwest grabbed five top 10 finishes including a fifth place finish from Adrienne Cornelius in the 400-meter hurdles. Cornelius ran a time of 1:07.37 to finish behind Missouri and three University of Lincoln runners.
Heidi Johnson also ran to a pair of top 10 finishes as she earned a sixth place mark in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.13. Johnson and teammate Taylor Woodruff each recorded a top 10 finish in the 1500-meter run as well, with Johnson placing sixth again and Woodruff coming in ninth.
On the men’s side Ryan Darling was the highest finishing male with a sixth place time of 14:50.57 in the 500-meter run. Close behind Darling was a pair of Bearcats, as Drew Keefer and Clary Martin finished 10th and 11th respectively.
Taylor Overmiller also finished 10th in the 800-meter run.
