Bearcats travel north, open indoor season
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s and women’s track teams head north to the Iowa State Holiday Preview on Friday for their first indoor competition of the season.
Head Coach Scott Lorek looks for continued success from his men’s squad with a large number of returners. Although the women’s side boasts youth, coach Lorek is still expecting solid results from them as well.
Men’s Indoor Preview
Tyler Shaw returns for his senior season as a six-time All-America placing sixth last March in the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Shaw also placed sixth at the Outdoor National Championships in the 110m hurdles and will race in the 200m for the Bearcats this winter.
Joining Shaw in the hurdles will be Zane Myers and Travis Manning. Manning was an All-MIAA performer last year in the 60m hurdles and nearly missed a provisional mark to the NCAA Championships with his third place finish at the MIAA Championships.
Returning in the long jump and triple jump is sophomore Porter Groves. Groves collected a top five finish at the MIAA Indoor Championships last March and will be looked at to carry a young group of jumpers.
Adding to the Bearcats long list of distance runners will be sophomore Zach Dixon and junior Kellen Schroeder. Dixon will look to help the Bearcats in the 400m while Schroeder will additionally compete in the 600yard run.
Also in the middle distance group for Northwest will be Taylor Overmiller and Derek Roberts. Overmiller will get his first taste of the indoor season after redshirting last winter while Roberts should provide points for the Bearcats in the 800m and 1,000m.
Will Haer will try to improve on his seventh place finish in the pole vault at last year’s MIAA Championships where he barely came up short, missing out on All-MIAA honors.
Women’s Indoor Preview
On the women’s side 5th-year senior Kate Walter has been near the top in almost every throwing event for Northwest. Walter will try to improve on her fourth place finish in the weight throw and become one of the top throwers in the MIAA.
Joining Walter in the throwing events will be junior Lekiesha McKnight. McKnight was solid last year for Northwest in both the shot put and the weight throw.
Samantha Fender returns for her sophomore season as one of the top sprinters for Northwest. Fender was a provisional qualifier last spring at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the 100 meters.
Along with Fender will be Ashli Mosby who will be looked upon to help anchor a young Bearcat squad in the hurdles and the 60 meters. Last year, Mosby was an All-MIAA finisher in the 60m hurdles.
A pair of junior pentathlon runners will compete in Ames, this weekend for Northwest in Jessica Hugo and Adrienne Cornelius. Cornelius will also look to score points for Northwest in the 800 meters.
