Men finish fifth, women ninth in Warrensburg

WARRENSBURG, Mo.—Northwest Missouri State’s men’s and women’s track and field teams placed fifth and ninth, respectively, at the 2011 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Central Missouri Friday through Sunday.

The Bearcat men added 26 points – 14 from junior Tyler Shaw – Sunday and finished with 41 points overall. Northwest’s women added 14 points – eight from sophomore Katti Carroll – and totaled 30 points.

Shaw placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.09s) and third in the 200-meter dash (22.01) to earn All-MIAA honors in two events. Carroll ran 3,000 meters to earn her second All-MIAA honor. She placed second in the event (10:16.30) a day after finishing third in the 5,000-meter run. Carroll accounted for 14 of Northwest’s 30 points at the championships.

Sophomore Will Haer and junior Taylor Overmiller picked up four points each Sunday. Haer cleared 15-feet-3-inches in the pole vault while Overmiller ran the finals of the 800-meter run in a time of 1:56.4. Both placed fourth in their respective events.

Travis Manning joined Shaw in the finals of the hurdles and placed fifth with a time of 8.40s. Freshman Ashli Mosby took sixth in the women’s race with a time of 9.02s. Senior Rachel Lewis competed in the finals of the 60-meter dash and placed fifth with a time of 7.75s.

Lincoln’s women and Central Missouri’s men walked away with conference championships. Lincoln’s 113 points were 32 more than second-place Central Missouri. Emporia State’s men were more than 50 points behind Central Missouri’s men (154), who captured their fourth straight crown.
