Walter Finishes Third in the Hammer Throw
CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Northwest Missouri State junior Kate Walter placed third in the hammer Thursday to earn All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor National Championships hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.
It is the first All-America honor for Walter, who placed ninth in the event a year ago. It is also the highest finish by a female Northwest track and field athlete since Mary Wirt placed third in the discus in 2004.
Walter threw 181-feet-7-inches on her second attempt which put her in second place heading into finals. The mark held up until Grand Valley State's Liz Murphy threw an inch further on her final attempt to slide Walter to third. Amanda Madden of Northern State won the championship with a throw of 192-feet-7-inches.
Walter is the third Bearcat to earn All-America honors in the event, joining Wirt who placed sixth in 2004 and Julie Humphreys, who took eighth in 1997.
