Five Bearcats Heading to NCAA Championships
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Five Northwest Missouri State student-athletes will travel to Charlotte, N.C., to compete for national titles following the announcement of the competition field today for the 2010 Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be held May 27-29. Irwin Belk Complex and Johnson C. Smith University will serve as championship hosts.
There were little surprises in the accepted lists as four Bearcats were each guaranteed a spot based on their automatic qualifying performances turned in earlier this season and the fifth, sophomore Tyler Shaw, held the fourth-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles.
Seniors Emily Churchman (heptathlon, long jump, high jump) and Ben McKim (shot put, hammer throw), junior Kate Walter (hammer throw) and sophomore Angela Adams (5,000-meter run) will accompany Shaw to Charlotte.
Of the five, all but Adams competed at last year's outdoor national championship meet. All but Walter competed at the NCAA indoor national championships held back in March.
Churchman is a four-time NCAA participant and will make her second outdoor NCAA appearance. She placed 11th in the heptathlon and also qualified in the high jump last season. She qualified for those two events and also the long jump this season.
Churchman was the MIAA runner-up in the heptathlon and scored a school-record 5,091 points in the process. The heptathlon kicks off the women's championships at 11 a.m. Thursday and continues at 11 a.m. Friday. Churchman enters with the 12th-highest point total in the nation.
Churchman will compete in the long jump at 7 p.m. Thursday and in the high jump at 5:35 p.m. Saturday. Her school-record leap of 19-feet-7.5-inches in the long jump at the MIAA championships ranks ninth in the nation. She cleared 5-feet-7-inches in the high jump at the Nebraska Invitational, which ranks 13th nationally.
McKim is the defending national runner-up in the shot put and has qualified for the hammer throw for the first time. He earned All-MIAA honors in both events by placing second in the shot and third in the hammer at the MIAA championship meet. His hammer throw of 193-feet-2-inches at that meet is a school record and ranks 12th in the nation. He's seeded fourth in the shot put after throwing 59-feet-9-inches at the Wildcat Open.
Like Churchman, McKim is a four-time NCAA participant and will make his second outdoor NCAA appearance. McKim will compete in the hammer throw at 12:30 p.m. Thursday and in the shot put at 5 p.m. Friday.
Walter finished ninth in the hammer throw at last year's national championship meet and is seeded seventh heading into this season's. Walter enters as the conference champion after throwing a program-record 183-feet-8-inches at the MIAA championship meet. She'll throw at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
Shaw is a three-time All-American in hurdles events and will look to make it four in a row in Charlotte. He placed fourth at last year's NCAA championship meet and took second at this year's MIAA championship meet with a season-best time of 14.18s. The preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles are at 7:35 p.m. Friday. The finals are scheduled for 6:32 p.m. Saturday.
Adams, who made her first-ever NCAA championship appearance at the end of the indoor season, will now make her first appearance at the outdoor championships. Despite falling on the final lap, Adams placed ninth in the 5,000 at the indoor championships. She's seeded 21st in the event entering the outdoor championships with a school-record time of 16:55.80 set at North Central last week and earned All-MIAA honors after placing third at the conference championships.
The prelims of the 5,000-meter run are at 7:50 p.m. Friday. The finals are set for 5:35 p.m. Saturday.
All times previously listed are Eastern Daylight Times. Athletes who finish in the top eight of their respective events automatically earn All-America honors.
