Biermann, Walter Break Records at Baker
BALDWIN CITY, Kan.-Lindsay Biermann broke Northwest's 23-year-old javelin record while Kate Walter broke her own record in the hammer throw Saturday at the Wildcat Open hosted by Baker University.
Biermann threw 140-feet-5-inches, eight inches further than the distance Amy Green threw in 1987. Biermann surpassed her previous best of 135-feet-9-inches set earlier this season in Maryville. Biermann's NCAA provisional-qualifying mark is good for 10th in the nation.
Walter threw 177-feet-3-inches in the hammer throw, surpassing the 177-feet mark she hit at last year's NCAA outdoor national championship meet. Walter's throw ranks eighth in the nation and is an NCAA provisional mark.
Both competitors took first place in their respective events at Baker. Biermann also placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.70s. Walter placed second in the discus (126-feet-6-inches), fourth in the javelin (115-feet-8-inches) and fifth in the shot put (37-feet-5-inches) in addition to winning the hammer throw.
