Twelve Claim Individual Titles at Jewell Relays
LIBERTY, Mo.-Twelve Northwest Missouri State student-athletes - seven women and five men - won individual titles at the William Jewell Relays Saturday. Northwest's women won the team race with 197 points. The Bearcat men placed second with 145 points, 15 shy of Central Methodist.
Junior Rachel Lewis and sophomore Courtney Jefferson finished 1-2 in the 100-meter dash and then flip-flopped their standing in the 200. Lewis ran a season-best 12.64s to win the 100. Jefferson ran a career-best 26.26s to win the 200.
Junior Kate Walter won the javelin with a season-best throw of 119-feet. She's also finished second in the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional mark of 165-feet-11-inches.
A trio of freshmen came away with wins. Adrienne Cornelius ran a season-best 1:06.63 in the 400-meter hurdles, Savanna Bird cleared a season-best 9-feet-6-inches in the pole vault and Lekiesha McKnight threw 130-feet-9-inches in the discus.
Senior Emily Churchman won the long jump with a distance of 18-feet-0.5-inches. Teammates Chelsea Dailey (17-3.5) took second, Nadia Wyatt (16-6) placed third and Jennifer Kiss (16-5.75) finished fourth.
Senior Ben McKim became the first Bearcat to secure a spot in the NCAA national championship meet by throwing 58-feet-6.75-inches in the shot put, an automatic qualifying mark. McKim won the event while teammates Eric Rickert and John Petroff finished third and fifth, respectively.
Northwest's men had their own freshmen trio as Will Haer won the pole vault with a season-best height of 15-feet-7-inches, Seth Staashelm won the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1:58.93 and Kellen Schroeder won the 400-meter hurdles with a finish of 56.87s. Zach Layton, a sophomore during the indoor season, but a freshman in the outdoor, won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:45.93.
