Churchman, Avilez Hit PQ Marks at Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State seniors Emily Churchman (center) and Johanna Avilez (left) both hit provisional qualifying marks in the heptathlon at the 83rd Kansas Relays Wednesday Thursday. Churchman placed fifth with 4,853 points while Avilez took eighth with a career-high 4,463 points.
Avilez set or tied season highs in six of seven events and had personal-best marks in the javelin (105-feet-11-inches), 200-meter dash (25.73s) and 800-meter run (2:38.42). Churchman also ran personal bests in the 200 (25.96) and 800 (2:24.50).
Nebraska's Megan Wheatley won the event with 5,323 points. Lincoln's Anna Kay Campbell finished second with 5,245 points. Three of the top four finishers were from Division I programs.
