Northwest Takes Part in the Missouri Relays
COLUMBIA, Mo.-Fourteen Northwest Missouri State student-athletes took part in the 11th annual Missouri Relays at the Audrey J. Walton Track & Field Complex Friday and Saturday.
Eight Bearcats - four men and four women - competed in the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Brittany Poole, competing in the event for the first time collegiately, placed sixth of 24 competitors with a time of 18:21.15 to lead the Bearcat women. Freshman Zach Layton placed 14th of 51 athletes with a time of 15:16.19.
The three other Bearcat women who competed in the 5,000 drastically improved on their career-best marks in the first meet of the outdoor season. Senior Jane Bowness took more than one minute, 20 seconds off her personal-best mark and finished in 18:32. Junior Madison Marshman improved her time by 34 seconds while finishing in 18:46. Sophomore Mary Jantz's time of 18:42 is 23 seconds better than her previous best.
Senior Brandi Honeywell competed in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time and placed third with a time of 1:05.23. Junior Bridget Klein took fourth in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 58.41s.
On the men's side, freshman Will Haer placed second in the pole vault after reaching a height of 14-feet-7.25-inches. Sophomore Tyler Shaw placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.75s (PQ is 14.65s). Freshman Porter Groves took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet-9-inches. Sophomore Waylon Martensen placed ninth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:10.54.
Northwest's men's and women's teams host the Northwest Open at 9:50 a.m. Saturday at the Herschel Neil Track. It's the first of two home meets for Northwest this season. The Bearcats will host the Bearcat Open April 30.
