Northwest Takes Part in Iowa State Classic
AMES, Iowa-Sophomores Angela Adams and Austin Gray along with senior Ben McKim turned in collegiate-best performances at the Iowa State Classic Friday and Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center. Eight Northwest student-athletes - six men and two women - participated in the meet in an attempt to improve or reach NCAA qualifying marks.
McKim tied the nation's fifth-best shot put performance with a career-best toss of 57-feet-7.25-inches - third-best in program history. Junior Kate Walter and sophomore Tyler Shaw turned in provisional marks in the weight throw and 60-meter hurdles, respectively, but could not top earlier-season performances.
Adams ran the mile in a personal-best time of 5:05.77, which keeps her in the fourth slot on Northwest's all-time list. Adams missed a provisional qualifying mark by a little more than one second.
Gray threw the weight 53-feet-10.25-inches, four inches better than his previous personal best.
Senior John Miles finished ninth in the 60-meter dash after running 6.93s in both the prelims and the final. Freshman Will Haer cleared 15-feet-1.75-inches in the pole vault and junior Eric Rickert threw the shot 49-feet-7.75-inches.
Northwest will send a full squad to Warrensburg, Mo., Friday to compete in the Central Missouri Classic. The MIAA Championship meet hosted by Missouri Southern begins Feb. 26.
