Walter Breaks Record, Finishes Ninth at Nationals
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Kate Walter set a program-record in the hammer throw to advance to the finals and finished ninth after the first day of the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at LaGrande Sports Complex. Walter threw 177 feet to beat the mark of 173-9 set by Julie Humphreys in 1998.
Walter posted a mark of 172-4 on her first attempt to improve her career-best by more than four feet. She stood ninth after the first two throws, but unleashed her program-record mark to move into seventh and seal a spot in the finals of the hammer throw in her first championship meet.
Walter came within three inches of her new career-best on her fourth attempt, but fouled on her final two attempts. She was on the podium in eighth until Ashland's Michelle Stark recorded 181-7 on her final attempt to bump Walter into ninth.
Walter, who was a walk-on her freshman season last year, was one of two sophomores to advance to the finals. She also improved her career-best by more than nine feet during the meet today.
Emily Churchman stands with 2,854 points in the heptathlon after opening the meet with a career-best 14.90 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. She heads into tomorrow's final three events No. 13 in the field.
Anna O'Brien, Bridget Kleine and Audrey Bailey was unable to reach the finals of the 1,500-meter run, 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. O'Brien and Bailey end their collegiate careers with program records in each of their events while Kleine returns for her junior season next year second in program records with 56.25.
