Churchman Automatically Qualifies for Heptathlon

CHICAGO—Northwest Missouri State junior Emily Churchman automatically qualified for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor National Championship Meet with her performance in the heptathlon Friday and Saturday at the University of Chicago’s Penultimate Meet.

Churchman ran season bests in three of seven events to finish with 4,816 points – 16 points greater than the automatic qualifying standard. Churchman is the 17th competitor to qualify for the event.

Churchman bested four other competitors in Chicago and won three events in the process. She established season bests in the 200-meter dash (26.63s), javelin (28.70m) and 800-meter run (2:24.96).

In other track and field news Saturday, Northwest senior Ben McKim and the Bearcat men’s 4x100-meter relay team each provisionally qualified for nationals at Emporia State’s Twilight Qualifier.

McKim, who will compete in the shot put at nationals, turned in a provisional mark in the discus Saturday with a throw of 161-feet-2-inches. Northwest’s relay team, consisting of John Miles, Kevin Okonta, Tyler Shaw and Sheldon Cook, ran a season-best time of 41.06s. That quartet placed third at the MIAA championships last weekend.
