Churchman Second After Day One of Division II Challenge
EMPORIA, Kan. - Emily Churchman used a win in the high jump and a third-place finish in the hurdles to finish as the top collegiate female athlete in day one of the Division II Challenge Multi-Events at Emporia State. Events were completed late after severe thunderstorms rolled through the region earlier this evening.
Churchman is on pace to match her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon after scoring 2,873 points, the same day one total from the Ashley Nally Heptathlon March 29. She finished in the top five of each of the four events today in the 20-athlete field including the win in the high jump with 5-5 ¾.
Johanna Avilez sets eighth with 2,558 points after starting the day with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. She also finished eighth in the 200-meter dash in 26.9 seconds.
Lindsay Biermann is 14th with 2,341 points after jumping 33-1 ¼ to finish third in the long jump. She was one of only three athletes to score at least 525 points in each of the four events.
All three Bearcats will continue their final three events tomorrow beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Witten Track in Emporia, Kan.
