Purnell Sets 300m Record at ISU
AMES, Iowa-Northwest senior sprinter Ron Purnell set a program record by running a 300-meter dash in a time of 35.1 seconds Friday at Iowa State University's Cyclone Holiday Track and Field Preview. The meet served as the opener for Northwest 2008-09 indoor track and field season.
Purnell bested the old record by more than a second. Kevin Reeves' 36.4 mark was set in 2002.
Juniors John Miles and Ben McKim provisionally qualified in the 60-meter dash and the shot put, respectively. Miles, a national qualifier in the 60-meter a year ago, ran in 6.88 seconds for the 13th fastest time in the nation. Kim's throw of 16.01 meters ranks seventh in the nation.
The Northwest women got second-place finishes from seniors Hannah Henry and Anna O'Brien. Henry ran the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.19 seconds. O'Brien finished the mile run in a time of 5:07.18.
