Bearcats Sweep Team and Individual Titles; Win 11 Events in Home Meet

MARYVILLE - Northwest Missouri State won both team titles for the second straight year and the men and women's individual titles in the 41st Jock's Nitch Northwest Open at Herschel Neil Track today. The Bearcats won 11 events, provisionally qualified one athlete for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and broke one school record.

Sophomore John Miles won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, breaking the school record in the 100-meter dash with a provisional qualifying mark of 10.48. He timed 21.55 in the 200-meter dash, seven-hundredths from qualifying for the NCAA meet. Senior E.J. Falkner finished second to Miles in both events.

Senior Kendall Wright won the men's individual point title by tying for the win in the pole vault, winning the long jump and finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. He earned eight of his 31 points last weekend with a second-place finish in the decathlon.

Freshman Kate Walter tied for the women's individual point title with 20 points. She won the javelin with a throw of 106-9, finished third in the discus throw with 122-11 and placed fourth in the hammer throw with 138-2.

Anna O'Brien won the 1,500-meter run with 4:51.22, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Freshman T.R. Pursell provided a Northwest sweep in the event, running 4:02.65 for the victory. Hannah Henry took top honors in the 100-meter hurdles for the second straight year, winning with a season-best 14.84.

A pair of Northwest juniors finished 1-2 in the women's high jump as Halley Carlson jumped 5-4.25, finishing a spot above Tierney Eaton who reached 5-3.

Sophomore Eric Rickert rounded out the Northwest individual champions with a win in the shot put, throwing 48-4.75 in his first meet of the season. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of John Bullock, Jimmy Griesbach, Tommy Warren and Miles won a close race by a tenth of a second, finishing with 3:21.29.

Northwest women multi-event athletes will travel next week to the D-II Challenge Heptathlon at Emporia State April 10-11. Both teams will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Jim Duncan Invitational April 12.
