Wright Leads Herschel Neil Decathlon After Day One
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Competing in his first career decathlon, senior Kendall Wright leads the field after the first day of competition in the Herschel Neil Decathlon. Wright won or tied for the win in four of the first five events, scoring 3,602 points.
Jennifer Kiss is second in the Ashley Nally Heptathlon after the first day of events with 2,485 points. She finished second in the high jump with 5-1.25 and third in the shot put with 30-11.
Wright won the 100-meter dash in 11.17, outscoring the runner-up by over 100 points to tally 823 points in the first event. He scored more than 800 points again in the long jump, to only athlete to reach 800 points in any event, by jumping 23-0.5 for 818 points. Wright jumped 6-4 in the high jump to tie for first and won the 400-meter dash with 53.08.
Senior Hannah Henry won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.30, but didn't compete in the rest of the events. Lindsay Biermann finished in a tie for second in the high jump with 4-11 in her best finish of the day.
Kayci Merrihew of Minnesota State University, Mankato, leads the heptathlon with 2,629 points.
Competition begins again tomorrow with the men's 110-meter hurdles at 9 a.m. The women begin the day at 10 a.m. with the long jump.
