Alsup Signs Eight Athletes

MARYVILLE -- Northwest Missouri State men's track and field coach Rich Alsup has announced the signing of eight athletes for the 2008-09 school year. Three players, John Hinchey, John Petroff and Tyler Shaw, will also don the Bearcat football uniform.

Five athletes will stay in state and one comes from Louisiana, Iowa and Nebraska.

John Hinchey (Kearney, Mo.)
High School: Kearney High School; Parents Mike and Nanett Hinchey
Notes: School record holder in 100-meters (10.8) and long jump (23'11") ... Placed second at state in long jump in 2006.
Coach Alsup: "With the loss of Kendall Wright, we are very fortunate to sign a young man like John who can step in and be very competitive in the sprints and jumps."

John Petroff (Chesterfield, Mo.)
High School: Parkway Central; Parents: Kathy Petroff
Notes: One of the top throwers in the state ... Holds the school's shot put and discus records ... A scholar athlete.
Coach Alsup: "John's outstanding size, coordination and quickness of feet could very well propel him into the MIAA spotlight."

Tyler Shaw (St. Louis, Mo.)
High School: Lutheran North; Parents: Dennis and Gladys Shaw
Notes: State champion in the 110-meter hurdles as a junior (14.1) ... State runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles as a junior.
Coach Alsup: "Tyler has all the tools to be an outstanding collegiate hurdles/sprinter and when he adjusts to the new hurdle height, he is going to be outstanding."

Ryan Darling (Prairieville, La.)
High School The Dunham School; Parents: Vernon and Marcia Darling
Notes: Personal bests in 800-meter (2:01.4), 1600-meter (4:30.8) and 3200-meter (10:07.0) ... Won Indoor State 1600-meter run his senior year ... Son of former Northwest track athlete Vernon Darling ... An academic honor roll student.
Coach Alsup: "He comes to Northwest with very impressive credentials from a small 1A private school."

Dylan McMahon (Omaha, Neb.)
High School: Omaha Central High School; Parents: Richard and Bonnie McMahon
Notes: Placed fifth in 1600-meter run his junior season ... Personal bests in 1600-meter (4:35) and 800-meter (2:03) ... An academic honor student.
Coach Alsup: "Ryan is a very young high school senior with much potential to mature into a fine collegiate distance runner."

Zach Layton (Platte City, Mo.)
High School: West Platte High School; Parents: Tony and Carol Layton
Notes: Won the district cross-country championship his junior and senior year ... Won the 3200-meter run at districts and placed fifth at state both his sophomore and junior seasons ... An academic honor student.
Coach Alsup: "Zach was one of our top five recruiting priorities this year as a cross country and distance athlete."

Jared Walker (Mount Pleasant, Iowa)
High School: Mount Pleasant High School; Parents: Anne Walker
Notes: Cross-country district champion junior year and runner-up in senior year ... Won 3200-meter run at districts his junior year ... Part of relay teams that were medalist's at the state meet ... An academic honor roll student.
Coach Alsup: "Another top recruiting priority this year, Jared is an outstanding distance runner from southwest Iowa."

Brentlee Thomas (Rockport, Mo.)
High School: Rockport High School; Parents: Billy and Amy Thomas
Notes: Personal best in high jump (6'6"), triple jump (44-2) and long jump (21-6) ... State champion in the triple jump and placed second in the high jump his junior season ... An academic honor student.
Coach Alsup: "Outstanding talent in all the jumps with great potential as college athlete. Brent is recovering from knee surgery and is expected to compete in late April."
