Bearcats Head to Joplin for MIAA Championships

Meet Notes

Both Northwest Missouri State indoor track and field teams venture to the St. John's Track inside Leggett & Platt Athletic Center today for the MIAA Indoor Championships at Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo.

The Bearcat women, ranked No. 21 in the latest USTFCCCA/ Division II Power Rankings, look to improve on last year's point total of 59. The Northwest men, ranked No. 25 in the same poll, will look for added speed among the sprinters and more experience for the throwers to move up from last year's fourth-place showing.

The meet will also be the last chance for Northwest to qualify additional athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15. So far, E.J. Falkner is the only male athlete to provisionally qualify, doing so in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. For the women, Halley Carlson provisionally qualified in the high jump. Both athletes qualified at the Central Missouri Mule Relays Feb. 7-8.

The Northwest women's 4x400-meter relay team of Audrey Bailey, Hannah Henry, Alissa Miller and Bridget Kleine are atop MIAA performance lists after winning the event at the Prairie Wolf Invitational last week.

Missouri Southern has been a friendly place for the Bearcat men. In the last three championships held in Joplin, Northwest has not finished lower than third. In 2006, the last time Missouri Southern hosted the meet, the Bearcats won five events, the most under head coach Richard Alsup. Eric Isley also set the championship record that year in the 800-meter run.

The MIAA Championships is the first meet this season for Northwest where team scoring will be kept. Teams will earn points for the finish of individual athletes and relay teams on a 10-8-6-4-2-1 scale. The top six athletes in each event earn All-MIAA honors.

Competition begins today at 1:30 p.m. for field events in men's weight throw and women's triple jump. Preliminary track events start at 3:45 p.m. with the 60-meter hurdles. The only track events running on Friday without preliminaries are the 5,000-meter runs and distance medley relays.

Events begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. with field events. Track final events will start at 1:30 p.m. with the mile runs.
